The Democratic Party is the party with the longest tradition in the political life of Serbia. It was established in 1919 (DS was forced to end it’s work in 1945) and is one of the first parties that has renewed its work after the change of political system. Founding Assembly of the Democratic Party was held on 3rd February 1990. First elected president was Dragoljub Micunovic. On the Assembly of the Democratic Party held on 5th January 1994, Zoran Djindjic was elected for President of the Democratic Party.
Democratic Party is the engine of changes in Serbia. Since its foundation, first as opposition, and since 2000 as a party participating in government, DS is the initiator and participant of most important political and social processes in the country. It had led the most significant activities of the opposition that eventually led to the fall of undemocratic regime of Slobodan Milosevic. Protests shook the regime with its massiveness, imagination and persistence, for stealing votes in the elections in 1996. By bringing together all of the opposition forces and forming Democratic Opposition of Serbia, the government that destroyed Serbia with wars, hyperinflation, election and other thefts, crime, arrogance and international isolation for ten years was finally beaten.
The Democratic Party has offered people the vision of better, more successful, modern, European Serbia by electing Zoran Djindjic for the first democratic Prime Minister of Serbia. He was the greatest hope and biggest victim of Serbia at the beginning of 21st century. He was brutally assassinated on 12th March 2003, which shook, but didn’t stop Serbia and Democratic Party. Democratic Party has remained worthy of work and sacrifice of Zoran Djindjic.
After the assassination of Zoran Djindjic, the members of Democratic Party have recognized Boris Tadic as a man who could and should lead the party in the future. He was elected President of the Democratic Party on the Assembly of the Democratic Party on 22nd February 2004. This has also been recognized by Serbian people who elected him twice for president, in 2004 and 2008.
Since 2008, The Democratic Party, which has taken the primary responsibility for running the country, has had dramatic challenges: defence for legitimate right of Serbia in Kosovo and Metohija, but also continuation of the country’s European path; maintain stability in conditions of economic crisis, and that while, as social democratic party, protection of the most vulnerable layers of population.
Democratic Party, despite all the difficulties, carries out the most important reforms in accordance with the highest European standards, reforms that fundamentally change and regulate our society. In the previous period, over 700 laws and regulations that modernize Serbia have been adopted, cooperation with ICTY has been ended, and Serbian citizens travel freely to countries of EU, important reforms of judiciary and defence have been carried out... Infrastructure projects, neglected for decades, have been finished and new ones started. Today, Serbia is a country that resolutely fights against organized crime, strongly supports independent regulatory bodies and institutions, which are finally enabled to work, in times of unprecedented economic crisis which has engulfed the whole world stability of the budget and new investments were secured, as well as significant incentives in agriculture.
Thanks to Serbian President Boris Tadic, today, Serbia is recognized as a country where reconciliation and good relations in the region are among the most important priorities.
During more than two decades of existence, the Democratic Party shows that it is the party who initiates and maintains the continuity of changes, which know how to manage the crisis, but also maintain stability, to file the biggest victims, but to continue the fight for a modern, democratic Serbia.
Today, The Democratic Party is the party which has the biggest confidence and support from citizens, the party which was and will be a national Serbian institution.
